I probably should have bought a set of these ten years ago rather than wasting my time with bottom mounted seats. I'm going to look for a side mounted seat. Which brand of brackets works with the most brands of seats?
I forsee myself cycling through a bunch of cars and maybe a few brands of seats. I'm hoping to find some kind of fairly universal set of brackets that I can reuse.
Sparcos seem to be the front runners at this point.
Wedge and Planted are brands I hear mentioned a lot, but I believe you may need to specify which brand of seat you want to run when ordering as the seat manufacturers have slightly different specs. Planted claims theirs work with "most major manufacturers," FWIW.
Recaro is the main one I have seen.
And to be honest I trust their seats after having them for many years.
I have Planted seat mounts. Have swapped them from an ultra shield to a Cobra. Fits both fine.
If your handy with working with metal and can weld then you can make your one. I did.
I took some angle steel to make the "L" part as I can't bend steel that thick and then some 4130 sheet steel in the same thickness and welded them together. Then you only need to lay out the holes for the bolts.
Slots are nice but if your building the mounts for a specific seat then you can just make holes that line up with "your" seat.
I could have make them out of aluminum but I like the strength and stiffness of steel in this application. It was going into a race car.
I had a pair of Momo rails that came with a seat I bought but the mounting options were not enough to fit in my car. The planted rails seems to have more options for mounting without looking like they would fold over on themselves instantly.
In reply to Nitroracer:
Are those steel or aluminum?
Steel and aluminum are both available. Straight sides or narrow like your original post shows too.
Thanks. I just ordered a pair of the aluminum Planted 90 degree brackets. Having them should make the seat decision a lot easier.
My new Planted brackets arrived a couple of days ago, via eBay. The quality is impressive and they should help me figure out my track seat mounting options...that is, as soon as I buy a seat and decide what kind of car that it's going into.
Get to work, mine are in the car!
