Any love for the diesel they put in these? My uncle has one and says the mileage is impressive but I have no idea about reliability/longevity

You could absolutely be right. I haven't really looked into sales figures much, but Toyman's post above stated GM sold 967K Colorados between 2002 and 2012. That doesn't include the GMC Canyon version. If that's accurate, the total should easily be over 100k per year average for the 2 models combined over their 10 year lifespan.
That number would also put it very close to (or likely exceeding) the number of Rangers that Ford produced during the same period, and I see those far more frequently. Like I said, maybe it's a regional thing, but it seems like there should be more of them around than there actually are.

That'd be the new generation of Colorados/Canyons with the DuraMini as I nicknamed it. Haven't seen any trouble with them at my work yet, although the fact that GM says the timing belt is good for 150k miles makes me a little nervous. I'd probably change it sooner than that just for peace of mind.

Not hearing of any engine issues on the GMT-700 forums. Stock rods are rated 500 lb. ft. so a few w/ aftermarket turbos and tunes pushing that envelop may have had problems. Stock engine is rated 369 lb. ft. I would change the timing belt at 100K miles just to CYA.
There were some issues w/ emission sensors w/ early models, that should be resolved now. There is a current voluntary recall for ECM reprogram, emission related. I haven't had any issues at 6K miles.
Fuel mileage at 75% highway (hilly SW PA and 55mph) has been a solid 30 mpg. Interstate ( 65-70 mph) 34 mpg. 75% city drops to around 24 mpg or less w/ winter fuel. Hilly 55 mph highway the trans won't shift to 6th that often. On the interstate it will and why the bump. Flat lands are getting better fuel mileage, more w/ tunes and deletes.
