Love those things, but they seemed like the Wrangler for the rich. There was a girl who commuted in one at the wealthy high school in town.

I love Jeeps. Shedding the doors and popping the top makes them even better. You can find TJ's for the $10k range and the amount of aftermarket parts is astounding
My mom drove a Trailduster when I was a kid in bright yellow, ramcharger and traildusters are out there in good shape still.

Given the criteria, I don't even know why anything but a Jeep would be a consideration. It's just the ultimate. Not that I don't like the other vehicles, but with the amount of support there is out there, and the stone simple reliability...

A Jeep would be the conventional choice--- there is a reason for that.
Jeeps have more aftermarket support than any vehicle.......ever. There is simply no limit to what you can do to a Jeep. Sure, they may be common.....but it's awfully easy to personalize a Jeep to make it "yours". Besides, a Jeep will outperform nearly anything else off-road, and still be livable on road. They also hold their value decently.
This is unless you need extra space, or serious towing ability. If that's the case, I'd go full-size Bronco or Blazer / Jimmy.
