It's called "deflection". It's a popular technique used to divert attention away from something you don't want to talk about.

Hi!
I've owned two of them. A black 1999 2 liter that drank oil, like so much that the VW dealer had it in a oil consumption study where they would change my oil for free so that VW could collect data on how much oil it used.
I bought it in Texas.
The other was a 2002 New Beetle Turbo S with the APH motor (1.8 turbo)
If the check Engine light would stay off for more than 3 days, it was a pretty comfortable car, but super heavy and even with the turbo, underpowered.
If you have any Mk4 VW and the check engine light is NOT on, make sure the bulb isn't burned out.
Cheers

Parts were plentiful and it was a riot to drive because it made angry noises at any speed and even winding it out did not result in extra legal speeds.
Yea. They are like the easiest cars ever to work on.
As far as the beetle, they aren't bad. 1.8 and 2.0 will treat you well if you do the same and are diy friendly. The tdi has reached God status. They aren't any worse than anything else. All the small "cute" cars have thier issues. Fiats get a bad rap because they sold all of them to people with 254 credit scores so they didn't get taken care of, beetles have a lil higher than normal parts cost, the kia soul was kias first hybrid burning 60% oil and 40% gas. You can make anything sound as good or as bad as you want. Buy her the beetle...
You know what would be cooler than a new beetle and a 500? An RX-8. It's even got Japanese reliability baked right in! You all need to stop. I was already against the idea, I was just trying to decide if maybe people were lying about it so they all stayed cheap and easy to buy or I kept getting bad info. I mean for me, if Alfa Romeo brought the manual trans Giulia to the the U.S. I would have bought one for myself, the base model. When it comes to putting my family in a car it needs to be reliable, easy to maintain and safe. The Beetle and the 500 both seems safe and the 500 seems easy to maintain but nah. Too much other cool stuff to choose from.

Rx8 will save gas
Manual Gulia would be fun tho. Being as how I'm a Alfa tech for a living I would never own one but it would be cool.
