This is the setup I went with and it's great. Nothing hogging space in the center of the ceiling, nice and quiet, all wireless operation and setup and because the door goes up so far it does not extend back into the garage very far when it's all the way up so not only is there clearance on the height, lengthwise it's only using 36" of ceiling (in case of 4 post lift that might matter). Not a cheap option but if a lift is even a possibility it's worth it.

Everything I read says I'll smash my face off with a torsion spring. Is it really possible that I can build the garage myself but I can't wind up a spring?

If you're careful, have the proper tools for winding the springs (basically, a couple steel rods of the right diameter to fit the holes on the spring holder) and don't put your face in the path of danger, it can be done without killing yourself. I've installed a couple of them.
