30 + years of driving in Minnesota winters with rwd, fwd, 4wd, and awd.  The best cars for beater service are low hp/torque to reduce spinning and breaking the contact patch. I use a taller and narrower winter tire for hard pack snow/ice conditions. It isn't always about just driving in winter. Accident avoidance is my main concern with low skill drivers on bad tires.
