I used the Google, all I did was get overwhelmed by all the threads and different kits.what kit has every part with the upgraded shift bushing. Aluminum or brass? I saw one from 5xRacing that even comes with redline MTL but I've never heard of them so I'm cautious. OK go

I got the aluminum bushing for my last miata and was severly disappointed, fit tight over the shifter ifself but the outside diameter was too small and felt like a sloppy factory bushing, it was 5x i believe. The factory rebuild kit is the way to go and if you manage to keep the car long enough for the cup bushing to wear out or break, it's probably time for another rebuild.

^^Did you replace the anti-rotation bushing as well? It can get pretty mangled and contribute to sloppy feel.

The 5x racing kit looks like it's just a Mazda rebuild kit with a bronze cup bushing instead of plastic. I'd just use a Mazda kit. You shouldn't have to rebuild it more than once.

I used the 5X cup bushing and OEM rebuild kit. It was a big improvement over the worn out factory stuff.

Can't speak to difference relative to all fresh oem.

I've bought a few other parts from 5x and they are good to deal with.

Factory parts plus Redline MTL on my NA 5 speed at 115k miles ... feels like 'brand new' (which is pretty nice!) Oh yea, replace both inner and outer boots while you are at it.

Rebuilding mine (97) meant sucking out the old fluid with a syringe and replacing it with Mobile 1 75-90 gear oil, dremeling a groove in the ball smooth, and replacing upper and lower boots. Plastic bushing was still in good shape.

Shifts perfectly.

Thanks for the reviews on the 5X racing guys, I put my order in and made sure to order both inner and outer boots. Next thing on my "to do" list for the miata are the rear differential bushings

Best mod you can do for the Miata shifter is the OEM rebuild kit coupled with the Ford Motorcraft XT-M5-QS gear fluid. Will feel better than it ever has.

In reply to robotic:

Yes i did, as for the bushing, say i set it into the turret by itself and it had probably .040 play in it. I mean it felt better than the one i pulled out but that was in pieces

go to miata.net and read up.

Miataroadster short shift kit is the epitome of awesomeness. Best mod I ever made to any car, including front disc brakes on the bug.
