I've heard that the Beetle would continue, heard it wouldn't, heard it was getting an update, and bastardizations of all 3 of those.
And I can't believe you guys didn't know that Paul McCartney was dead...

Hey, its a recent occurrence. Here is the news report for everyone who didn't hear.

I recently decided I wanted a challenging hobby, something very hard to do and time consuming. Something that requires me to really pay attention and not make any mistakes. I was going to learn Mandarin but I decided to do the harder choice and bought a 2002 Beetle.

That is NOT the next New Beetle but it does have some of the cues down. It will be Golf based, It will have a lower, squarer roof line and will look like a squashed ball. Expect a little less "Old New Beetle" on the front end and a little more flare as well as taller/deeper rockers.

That's a good thing, cause that car looks like a polished turd that a resurrected gigantosaur stepped on.
Here's the real New Beetle for '11. It does look a bit more squared off.

DAMN! I hate myself. I actually think that looks good. I won't buy another VW though I have had many in the past, I just can't deal with all the pain that goes along with owning a VW.
My wife's coworker bought a NuBeetle ragtop of about that '02 vintage. It was never right in the whole time she owned it. Electrics, gauge cluster, permanent CEL that the dealer gave up even trying to fix, etc. etc. etc. I can't imagine what a white-knuckle ride it must have been trying to get it through the emissions inspection where you have to prove you haven't disabled the CEL or reset the PCM.

If I could get a TDI with a manual tranny, that'd make a neat runaround. Of course, I feel safe knowing that VW will never sell a manual TDI for Dexter-level money.

Yup.
You want a diesel? Fantastic! Then you will really enjoy the sat-nav system, the dual sliding sunroof, the full leather interior, satellite radio, premium wheels, and whale wang leather shifter boot.
Even after the experience of owning her '05 NB 'vert my wife wanted to go test drive a TDI Jetta SportWagen. I asked the dealer what the warranty length was and it was SHORTER than the warranty we had on the '05. I laughed and asked the salesman if VW couldn't afford to warranty their cars after 36k anymore. My wife looked at the sticker and asked if we could get one without all the added B.S. Nope, that is the way they come. Loaded to the gills. Good thing only rich people want a fuel efficient car. We bought a 2010 Santa Fe that routinely knocks down 22 mpg in mixed driving, has a 10 year/100k warranty and cost thousands less than the Jetta TDI wagon.
Three words... sell, sell, sell.
As a manager of a few import repair shops, I can safely say that even if you paid someone to drive it away, you'll probably save money in the long run.
PM me for some sample repair orders.

I'm a "Dubber", and I approve of this message. Back when I used to hang out on vwvortex, one of the guys had it right in his sig file:
"VW stopped making cars after 1992."
I see a few guys with modded Mk3 Golfs that have ironed out all the problems (see JG's project car here at the magazine), but it seems that every other late-model VW I see is a pile of uncommunicating electrons and pooling antifreeze. Don't know if VW AG is responsible for it, or if it's the insistence of the Corporate Morons at VWoA that VW becomes a "luxury" brand in the US, but the end result is that you really can't get them to work the way they should without large injections of money.
Listen to Jensenman, he speaks the truth. I love VW's Corrado..I own two of them..but they were VW's first attempt to "move upmarket", but even though they're mechanically sound, I spend most of my time chasing down gremlins in all that electric E36 M3 to keep them running.
isn't Renault the only car company that made Fiat look reliable and rustfree?
Not that I do not like the Twingo.. sharp little car
