Any PA people familiar with the process? Wrecked the Camaro last week and am planning to retain the car as a swap donor. Need to basically trade in the title for a certificate of salvage before the insurance man pays me my money.

Looks like MV-6 is the PennDOT form that I need. What I'm not sure of is what to do with it. Do I take it to one of the notary/title transfer places? Do I mail it in directly to PennDOT? I'm clueless on this process.

Your insurance company should tell you how to do it. Thus, you must be dealing with idiots.

Yes, the MV-6. Its been a long time since I've done one but as I recall you just fill it out and send it in. However, it may be a good idea to ask at a tag service/notary (not just someone who does titles). You send it in and wait...then get a salvage certificate which is basically a title of ownership for a car you can't drive. The insurance co will need a copy of it to keep in the file to absolve themselves of liability.

If you get stuck trying to figure it out PM me. I think I have instructions on my work computer.

Yea, kind of

Actually, the insurance guy was able to clarify things somewhat when I talked to him again. Apparently the salvage certificate can take up to 6 weeks when mailing it in, so I'm gonna see about just driving up to the PennDOT building in Harrisburg Monday. I'll call them tomorrow and see what's up.

Thanks for the help, much appreciated!

Yup, on-site goes way quicker. Go early in the AM before all the losers get out of bed and you won't have to wait in line.

Suprised the Ins.co. Isn't keeping the title.was it No fault,Did you buy the car back,If you have a clear title KEEP IT. If they have to Pay off it's their car.

Title is still clean and in my name, haven't done anything with it yet. Other driver was at fault, but I am keeping the car for the LS1 and T56. Basically the $1100 salvage value gets deducted from my payout from the insurance co. They just need a copy of the salvage certificate before they pay me, basically proof to them that the car has been rendered legally inoperable. Salvage certificate remains in my name as proof of ownership.

In reply to Furious_E:

When my Miata was totaled I sent them my title and they handled all the stuff with the state to handle the salvage title. That was USAA and Florida so YMMV.

Once it does become a salvage title It's tough to get a car title thats clear. and in Ga. you cannot get Tags on Salvage. but can't you find an eng.and trans for less than 1100.00 unless it's hopped up. Offer them 600 and pay the tow bill, even better if it's at your house already.
