I traded for a couple of new (old) model kits at a show yesterday (where my Lincoln Mark VII Pro-Street and Datsun 240Z rally car both took 2nd in class), one of which is the Scarab rear-engined sports car. I've been able to learn from the googles that Scarab only made 1 of them, and it was the last one built. It also supposedly won the Nassau sports car race twice.

Any help? I'd like to build this thing but I have no idea what it's supposed to look like.

PS - Model #2 is a Porsche 935-78 in Martini livery

edit: ah... missed the 'rear engine' bit:

Found this, although I can't view the picture from here:

A rear-engined Scrab? Now that's interesting. Until now, I've never seen a pic of one, or a mention anywhere.

Augie Pabst/Meister Brauser tribute?

Here's a quick synopsis of the story. Augie owns his old Scarab, and still runs it a couple times a year, even though he's pushing 80.

I googled a long line of specifics about that car (something like "1961 Scarab Rear-Engine Grand Prix Racing Car") in a regular google search and in images, and ran across this forum thread.

They're about half way down.

OK, everybody is somebody's weirdo, but when you said "Scarab rear engine" I immediately thought of this.

I like 'em.

Lord forgive me, but I'm having impure thoughts about Detroit's first minivan.

In reply to 914Driver:

Someone should build a replica of that.

Agreed, I don't know anyone with the time or talent.

How about money? I'm certain Ida Automotive in NJ (builders of Tucker replicas) could build that without breaking a sweat. Of course, if you have to ask how much...

Would it have to pass HTSB or whatever crash tests?

I read an article about the Scarab van in some engineering magazine a couple years ago. Truly revolutionary for its time...and also what I first thought of when I saw the title of this thread.

First and foremost: Is it possible there has ever been a greater race car guy name than -

"Lance Reventlow"?

B.S. Levy couldn't have come up with that.

Wealthy playboy, heir to the Woolworth fortune, right place, right time. Scarab hadn't been taken as a sports car name yet. Like being John Lydon in 1976 in London...

There's copies of the front engine cars now too...
