Unfortunately, there are no "local" credit unions. One 40 miles north. One 30 miles south. So my business money is at one local bank, and my personal money at another.

I have a killer credit score. Should I just start calling local(ish,) non-local credit unions? Any website recommendations? This is all new to me.

Local banks' rates suck. Bankrate is showing 2-4% from credit unions.

What year is the car you're looking to finance and is it a private sale or from a dealer?

I got 1.65% from my Credit union but you need membership. Look at any professional or civic organizations you may be involved with. I qualified for mine through my job.

@hrdly: 04-07, probably private sale, $15k less $5k down, 48 month term, 820 credit score.

I bet the CU rate is worth the gas. If all goes well you just mail the checks and never have to drive there again.

FWIW when car shopping 7 years ago I signed up and bought the car the same day. Later on I refinanced my house with them.

Typically, the older the car the higher the rate. Two percent on a ten year old car is going to be very difficult no matter how good your score (820 is a killer score BTW). In fact, four percent will be tough.

You'll also be limited on term as the car gets older, so while you may be able to get sixty months on the '07, thirty six may be the max on the '04

A private sale may be a sticking point for your lender too, as the bank will want a guarantee of title in order to place a lien on it.

That being said, if you can't get to a credit union and you don't like the bank rates, perhaps a home equity line of credit?

Home equity loans have pretty low rates and you can write off the interest in some cases. so. .. buy a new furnace or roof too :D

+1 on Pentagon Federal Credit Union https://www.penfed.org/

You don't need to be in the Military and are eligible after becoming a member of the National Military Family Association ($20) or Voices for America's Troops ($15) associations. You do not need to renew the membership with these other associations after the PenFed account(s) have been opened so consider it a onetime fee to gain access to a great credit union with very competitive rates. My family has used a number of their home and car loans as well as credit cards over the years.

Check with your bank, a lot of times an auto-deduct payment will net another 0.5% off the note.

Does this mean you found a CTS-V you're ready to pull the trigger on?

3rded on penfed.org

Financed the z06 with them, did it all over the phone and they mailed me the documents. Pay the note online once a month. Never seen them in person.

Approved at 1.99% through Penfed! Thanks dudes!!! Only condition (as one of you mentioned,) is they need a copy of the front & back of the title. Dude says he "still owes a little" on the car, but assuming the purchase amount is more than he owes (duh) everything's everything, right?
