Friend from another forum just bought for his 18yo daughter:
2002 GT Spyder with the V6. Slushbox. I told him I'd visit with you guys to get the skinny on what to look for (right after I told him he shoulda asked me before he put his money down.. )

Aw, man! The article's great, but doesn't cover the 3rd gen cars. I guess they were still being made when it was originally published..

Already told him that. I'm just looking for what breaks on `em. All I can find on the DSM forums is how much the other Eclipse owners hate them.
Consumer Reports would probably be a better place to ask around than here; try looking for a readership that doesn't care about cars very much, they would probably know more about this thing.
Water pumps seize if not changed by 100K. Transmissions puke if the fluid isn't changed every 30K, With SPIII Mits fluid! front brake wear, window adjustments and since it's a Spyder, water leaks. NUMEROUS top TSBs. Headlight switches.
These are actually good cars, and I plan to carjack my niece out of her '03 when she's done with it.
But it IS a Japanese Monte Carlo.
Wow, I can't remember if I read it somewhere else....but everyone has picked up on my less than affectionate term for the 3rd and 4th gen. Eclipse.
technically it isn't a DSM. Chrysler was out by that point... "period" correct commercial...I still remember it, to this day.
The 4G is what I call a Motherberkeleying Freightliner!!
The Galant and Eclipse are WAY too big.
I actually typed Motherberkeleying....How sad am I??

Thanks, man. That's what I'm looking for. My buddy was actually relieved to discover he'd bought the girl a "cruiser" instead of a "sports car". He's a long-time biker, but doesn't really care about cars. Thanks again, everyone! Another example of why the GRM boards rock.

Walked out half-way thru "Driven", dude. Figured if Hollywood could screw up real racing that badly, there was no reason to watch anything about street "racing". Hurts my feelings, really..I'm a film fan too. I wonder what Frankenheimer (Director, "Grand Prix") would have done if he'd had the chance to do that movie about Group C racing back in the 80s.
I didn't even see the original FnF until we showed it at work one night. IMO, it says a lot about how misunderstood our sport is among the "civillians". No damn wonder people like Ms. Ranyak think all the ills of American auto culture can be placed on our doorstep.

ROFL! I remember that one, too after seeing it again. (maybe I've been working in TV too long?) All my DSM buddies started cursing like I did when the Mk.3 VW GTI came out!
At least the ad's "appropriate"..they are just cruising, instead of pushing it like the Archer Brothers used to do..
