So I have a chance to buy a partially restored/partially disassembled 1978 example.

I know almost nothing about these cars except:

They're sorta rare

They're all silver

They were all 5 speeds, and had a better suspension. Oh, and if the heater core is busted, you're in for a bad time.

What should I look for when I go and view this one? Rust areas? Unobtanium parts? BTW, I assume this example is non-running. How mad would Volvo crew be if I swapped an LS1 in?

I had one in the early 80's. There was not much "GT" about it, but they were good solid cars. Go to the http://www.brickboard.com for all the brick info.

I liked them. Silver with stripes, and corduroy seats.

Awesome looking cars, awesome interiors. All the aesthetic stuff is what's hard to find. IIRC, the suspension is the only difference between the GT and the regular 242. Would go hard with a turbo or twin cam swap.

Those were always my favorite Volvos.
