I assume that at some point, someone thought about marrying the diesel engine in a semi to a generator and then wiring up some electric motors at the wheels like a locomotive or a ship, yeah?  What makes that a bad idea?  Packaging problems?  Not enough constant torque demand?

I'm sure they have, too.  Probably cost is the big problem.  Especially the projected benefit for the nominal duty cycle.

There are hybrid diesel busses, and my home city (Ann Arbor) has had them for over a decade, and it's time to replace them.  And even though A2 is one of the most "left" leaning cities in the world, I really don't see them geting them again- even though the bus duty cycle is very much in tune with what a hybrid system should offer.  I'm not sure of the entire details, but they are not yet worth it.  (although, I do wonder if they went to F1 style 1000V batteries they would be more effective....)

I was involved with the procurement of some of those hybrid buses when they were first on the market.  They had a number of teething problems- some of which were caused by unhappy interactions between the Tier IV diesel equipment and the hybrid drive systems.  I've been out of the bus game for awhile, but last I heard Baltimore is going back to straight diesel buses.  The cost-benefit just isn't there, and the reliability was abysmal.

That said, I'm a fan of straight electric buses; I think the duty cycle for urban use is pretty much perfect and the infrastructure wouldn't be too hard to implement.

alfadriver, you need to be careful talking like that.  Some of these EPA hitmen might shoot you.  It's super serious stuff, I'm living in fear every day now.  I just hope no one finds out I also tore the tag off a pillow.

All fun and games until you catch a 9mm to the face when one of the EPA assualters had an ND on his MP5 coming though your door to conduct 'warrant service' for your polluting car.

Oh, this is getting good.

Hey Garage monkey, did you come here just to fight about some agency that has probably never directly impacted you and you have never directly had dealings with?  Why do you feel so strongly about the epa?

Oh no! The water and air is too clean!

Because the missions isnt to 'clean them' the objective is to eradicate them. The modern internal combustion engine is incredibly clean - to the point you cannot get cleaner without severe diminishing returns. The EPA is mandating that the bar keep going higher - knowing full well cost will far surpass any gains in cleanliness achieved.

So you don't know that CARB is legally required to choose the less expensive and more effective solution to their problems, then.  PZEV exists because it was both cheaper and more effective and EV's back 2000.  So the EV mandate had to be changed because of that- so they are legally required to do that.  Just like the EPA is.  Since you don't know that, I'll suggest that you participate in the EPA and CARB hearings that they publicly hold for new rules, as required, by law.

WRT cars, who, financially at CARB, is benefiting from the rules?  You need to explain how they are "about money"...

The EPA is a terrible harmful agency within the Federal bureacracy. Because of their benign sounding name, they generally dont get a whole lot of attention but they regularly target individuals and organizations that they percieve as politically assymetric to them and target and torment thousands of small business owners throughout the country - causing undue costs and burdens they know they (the small business owners) cannot bear.

I'm as conservative a person as you will find on this forum, but there is a proper way to have a discussion and there is what you are doing. This is obviously one of your hot buttons so I would recommend you step away from this and have a cold one.

I guess I get really spun up, not to mention insulted, when an imbecile compared the mission of the EPA with that of the US military. And if the powers that be on this site feel that that is an ok comparison, then I dont want to be a member here.

IMHO, you should find another place to vent.  But that's just me and being here for over 20 years.  If you don't want to accept that the EPA has actually saved people's lives, it very much seems like you are in serious denial of the effects of clean air and water.

Alfadriver and I don't see eye to eye on many issues, but we do see eye to eye on many others. I can promise you he is not an imbecile. Here we discuss the commonalities we have. Disagreements can be discussed but only in a respectful tone. Start name calling and everyone is going to ignore you.

Given that I actually work within the reality that you are projecting, yea, I very much don't see what you seem to think is happening.

And I will finish by telling you that there are some very strong conservatives that work for the EPA.  I'm sure you will decide not to believe that, as it does not fit your narrative, but since the real reality does not, this should not be different than that.

Good luck with your life.

Wait, what???

So we can only post positive things about the EPA here, is that what you are saying?  The EPA, an arm of the Federal bureacracy who has a direct impact on the hobbies we are passionate about, we cannot post anything negative about them here?

Really?

I will concede that the EPA was established with good intentions, and perhaps in the last 50 years has done some good. However, the EPA has long outlived its usefulness. It has morphed into a weaponized agency, used by those (outside and within) who harbor a political dogman and agenda as a bludgeon against those whom they wish to target. The workforce that the modern EPA attracts (at the HQ level where policy is made) are not regular Joe and Janes, they are big city leftists, typically orginating from the coasts - especially Northern Virginia and Maryland. They do not have the best interest of us in mind, they seek to force you to comply with their political dogma.

This. This is almost a reasonable paragraph. Leave out any political reference to right/left/socialist/communist/fascist and Hitler and you are golden. Make it reasonable, make it factual, make it understandable and it's acceptable. They will happily debate it. Throw down the name calling and any political BS and you will get called out and kicked out. Making a reasoned argument will go a lot farther to encouraging others to truly think about a subject. They may not change their mind, but they will at least understand your position.
