I ran across this in a financial blog post or something:

https://invest.liquidpiston.com/?utm_source=rgalpilandingpage&utm_medium=partnership01-01_12-16&tnames=partnership01-01_12-16&lp=text1#discussions

I'm not so interested in investing in the company, but thought the engineering looked interesting. Looks like an improved rotary engine? I know nothing about rotaries, but maybe someone here can cast a critical eye on this because I thought the rotary engine like was used in the RX 7 was not known for great gas mileage?

Sorry if this is a repost : )

Also, I thought liquidpiston was what happened when you ran too much timing or boost! LOL

In reply to nedc :

The issue, like the issue with the bicycle chain, is that we engineered the best solution a hundred-plus years ago.

And like the bicycle chain, people come up with a "revolutionary" design that mainly serves to filter money from investors.

The Wankel at least DID have a good reason for existence, as piston combustion tech was not as well developed, and it was seen as the only realistic way to get clean NOx emissions with marketable engine life.  (Ford, or maybe GM, was projecting 3000 miles before overhaul was required with piston engines and early 70s emissions technology) Then the catalytic converter was invented and that pressing need disappeared.

It seems like the liquidpiston engine could work decently as a range-extender generator for a series hybrid, it could run at a fixed load this way to maximize efficiency and its small size would be a big advantage. If emissions are bad...maybe for a hybrid SxS?
