Turning to GRM since I've never dealt with this; no particular experience with either ceramic pads or terrible squeal.

A friend pinged me as the group's car guy to ask whether her mechanic is feeding her a line. He just put ceramic pads on their car, and when it squealed annoyingly they called to ask about it, and he told them it would take about 500 miles for them to completely bed in and stop... They're at about 250 miles and not enjoying it.

That seems like a lot of distance to me past the usual first-thing-after-installation bedding in procedure usually followed more or less by normal operation.

Their car is, IIRC, a '97 850 in case anybody knows anything about their particular proclivity for brake squeal...

sounds to me like they didn't get bedded in properly to start with ... they may still be able to do so, even with the amt. of miles already on the pads (may have to have the rotors dressed before the bedding process will take )

8 - 10 60-70% pedal pressure "stops" from 45 mph to 5 .. then immediately back up to speed again ... wash/rinse/repeat .. then same thing from 60 to 5

then park the car long enough for the brakes to completely cool before using again

Perchance does she ride her brakes into a stop with a long gradual application of the brakes so that she always has gentle stops?

In reply to carguy123:

This I don't know. Are you thinking glazing?

All I've got is that it didn't do it before, and after the shop installed ceramics, it does...

Unfortunately, these friends are on the other end of the country from me right now, so I can't personally verify anything. It's been quite a while since I rode with her, and I'd be much more likely to remember hard stops at the last second than gradual, gentle stops

Did they use anti squeal grease?

The noise could be anything. Have them do several repeated hard stops. If the noise is still present there is likely an installation issue, or a stuck caliper. I'm guessing the noise annoys them, so in turn they are avoiding hitting their brakes, prolonging the bed in.

If they didn't replace or cut the rotors the squeal will never go away. 250 miles is well past how long it takes to bed in brakes through normal driving.

I got confirmation that the rotors were replaced with new parts.

What BRAND pads, also? They might simply be using crap pads.
