I need a new tire pressure gauge, my current one doesn't seem to give very consistent readings and also struggles with tires when the valve stem is buried in there a little deeper. I do autocross a lot so it will get a lot of use and I would like it to be at least fairly accurate. I'm not a national level driver or a NASCAR team though so I don't need a $200 gauge that can make accurate 1/4 pound adjustments. Any recommendations?

I bought one of these too use on the race cars. 4" in diameter means old eyes can read it without glasses. It's also pretty east to find.

I have a digital that I hate. It has an auto off feature that seems to be timed exactly to the amount of time it takes to put a couple of pounds in. Well, timed to go off just before you put it back on the stem, anyway. Point is, I'm always having to turn the thing on.

Also, keeping up with batteries is a PITA.

Don't do digital.

There was a article in the magazine about that topic once. Found a reprint on TireRack.com:

I've come to absolutely love my cheap Harbor Freight clip on gauge/filler. It's very consistent in repeats (no idea if it's actually accurate), and being connected (with a quick release) to my air tank, makes adjusting the tires absolutely wonderfull.

I think it's the older version of this: http://www.harborfreight.com/pistol-grip-tire-inflator-with-gauge-68270.html

If you end up with a dial type I'll pass on a trick i learned when i drag raced. Grab a beer can Cozy cut it down to about 3 inches tall and poke a 1/2 hole in the side down by the bottom, feed the hose through the hole. The foam rubber will protect the unit while traveling and the raised sides allow you to see it clearly in blinding sun and also make sure your looking at it dead on and not side view this way your consistent. Mine grow legs never to be seen again so i started using a cheap digital unit that reads 1/2 lbs and now no one at the track ask to use it. but truth is it is very accurate when i tested with the calibration gauges at work. I'm going to miss some of the perc's of working here but not the place itself...start new job next monday

i have a nice autometer one like this.

very accurate, and it has a check valve so you can sample pressure and then take it off the tire and look at it without loosing the reading.

I have this one:

Like it a lot. Comes with two chucks. The "angled" chuck is great for getting at those buried valve stems.

I have a Slime digital unit that I got for about $30. I've been using it for 3 years now without changing the battery. Has an extended hose and a bleeder button, plus a memory setup that I've never used (prefer to just write things down).

All and all it has been great.

I bought a Matco digital inflater/pressure gauge deal when they first came out for $125, IIRC. Have yet to ruin it. I think it only does .5 pound increments though.
