Mandatory tire for my car. Any recommendations?
You may TRY to run RA1s in the snow, but I bet you won't succeed. I once had to move a 320i on Rivals from the front of the shop in, to put on winter tires. Took quite a while.
I recommend not. I once tried to drive a few blocks in my MR2 Turbo on RE72s. I looped it within 50 ft of my driveway (no harm) then proceeded to have several near misses while getting it to the storage place. There was maybe 1 cm of snow on the ground.
RA1's in the snow you say? Can you add studs?
Ill bet paved surfaces will only be slush and will clear off quickly. Especially if they get the big blower out at Summit. The cold though, that will make the tires difficult.
It's a school so I have to run. I'll make sure the stewards know my situation but i believe most of us running crappy cold weather tires. I remember trying to move my hpde 944 in sub freezing weather on ra1s. Couldn't get it to move on a flat surface. So yeah, I'm nervous
First auto x last year we had temps in the mid 30s at best and snow showers that lasted through the first heat. Nothing was really accumulating on course, but there were still a LOT of spins that day. Just be careful.
I want to believe that if you must run those tires to meet the rules, that the rule makers will be smart enough to call it off if it is not safe to run? I mean, if this is a school, what is the lesson to be learned?
I can't imagine being REQUIRED to run a school with completely inappropriate rubber. I mean, are you at gunpoint? There's always the option of saying "repairing the car is more effort than rescheduling the school".
Toyo does actually caution against using those tires below freezing due to potential tire damage.
Concur with Keith - If it's a school, they won't be checking the car's compliance with class rules other than safety. And I'd call running any summer tire in snow pretty unsafe.

I'd say it's just not worth the risk. How much are you going to learn sliding around at 20 mph? And if you do get up some serious speed, the result could be a trip to the hospital. I once spent a month in a neck brace from a situation not too dissimilar.
I'll refer you to the sticker on them that states that you shouldn't even move the car for 24hrs after they've been frozen. They Suck when they're cold.
