The second gear synchro is wearing on one of my old Saabs. Is crunchy on the downshift. The Bentleys manual says that you can use 10w40 Castrol or gear oil. The internet geniuses say Honda MTF. What sayeth you GRM?

A 75-90W synthetic gear lube should cover the bill. Something heavier may help that syncro like the 80-140W version but I prefer the lighter weight stuff.
How old? IIRC the 99s supposedly used engine oil in the gear box.
I'd be tempted to dump Redline MTL in there and see what happens - worked wonders on my CRX, which is also supposed to use engine oil.
In reply to iadr:
Try a bottle of Lucas trans fix(the stuff usually sold for automatics) and topping off with 15w40 motor oil. Better than leaving in the black glittery gunk.
shame it is a 91.. the early (pre 88ish) boxes had a dipstick to make it easier to change the fluid on a regular basis
I'm not an expert, but I'll repeat what I've heard from those with serious SAAB c900 cred. If using motor oil or straight 30wt, change it frequently, the c900 gearbox runs hotter than most due to engine heat. Even with fresh oil, an essentially healthy gearbox can feel rough. At that point, upgrade to Honda MTL or Redline MTL. Those two seem to have the best success rates and fewest side effects. I have some Redline waiting for mine when I get it back on the road.
very true Andy. While the oil in the gearbox never meets the oil in the engine, the engine still uses the gearbox as it's reservoir. If you have ever seen a 900 gearbox away from the engine, you will see how the transaxle itself is all pushed to one side of the case and the rest is oil pan for the engine.
