Can you wash it? It seems to be gaining in popularity, but could you actually use it on a daily driver?

I would say it would be better to use regular paint with a matte clear. Matte clear can be washed. Personally I think pretty much any car can look great with a mate finish. I fell in love with the option when SCC did a 09 WRX sedan in matte black with white wheels...sooo hot, want to touch the hiney. I really want to do my G20 in matte white, with glossy white stripes of the same color. I would assume black would have a similar effect with that motif, perhaps even more visible.

There was also the thread a bit ago with the bedliner'd audi, similar effect to matte finish, plus bulletproof protection. Though I would assume taking the bedliner route might detract some from resale value.

In reply to 4cylndrfury:

Here's a question. If you paint a vehicle with matte paint or matte clear, and you get dust or a bug or something in the paint, can you buff it out or does the paint have to go on pretty much perfect?

Factory matte paint is different than just painting yourself with a matte paint. I believe the factory uses regular paint with a matte clear and as somene else said, it's washable and it's harder than matte paint you find in a rattle can.

I've been considering a Matte urban green for the long-term E30 project....I'll be following this thread.

I HAVE heard that matte clearcoat is the way to go.

Back in the day I had an AAR Cuda (340 6 pack) with an almost matte black hood. It was very difficult to wash. I had to constantly repaint it with a mixture of matte and gloss paint. Unfortunately this mixture didn't hold up well to daily use. It seems the matte paints don't have the binders that make the paint hard and daily wear would cause issues.

Since that time they've come out with a matte clearcoat which is what Harley uses. While I haven't used it I have talked to Harley shops and they say they've had no problems other than people trying to buff it to a gloss and it seems more susceptible to hazing when chrome cleaners/polishers get on it. It's tougher to get it off.

We're painting my roommate's 323 GTX Blitz Black soon. Should be interesting.

Matte black is over done. I'd like to see other matte colors though.

If you are doing matte black, go with the John Deere Blitz Black. Tough as nails--literally^, and cheap as dirt.

^I know a guy who has a car painted with it. I was commenting on how tough the paint seemed, and he pointed me to a scratch on it that was noticeable, but not by much. You could just barely feel it passing your hand over it. He said that his 5 year old took a nail to it. The same force would have taken anything else down to the primer and possibly gouged the metal. The paint is literally tough as nails.

If pop culture deems something Passe, thats actually good news for us! That means higher depreciation rates, and therefore more race cars in the marketplace! We are not on the "Super-up-to-date-roots MotorSports" forum here. I mean, someone at Ford tweaks the 2011 Taurus to allow 9 degrees more camber or 12 lbs more boost, and almost no one here bats an eye. But a company releases a new shifter bushing for a 28 year old European coupe, and all our heads explode! Passe is our bread and butter!

WAIT!!!! Who released the new shifter bushing? Can I adapt it to the Merkur?

Satin paint seems to be the way to go to me. It is easier to clean.

Fir a DIY, you can get a matter additive for most clears. The more you add, the flatter the finish.

I don't care if it's "passe"....done right, it looks BAD ASS.

In a good way. Nathan

Anyone have a source for matte paint? I was thinking of using it on my challenge car, but 0 clue as where to get it (I do have a gun and compressor) don't wanna do cans.

Go to your nearest John Deere Dealer, and ask for Blitz Black.
