I did red oxide primer on our Civic project, and it behaved more or less like paint. Oil would leave marks, but they'd eventually seem to fade away. If I did it over again, probably should have topped it with clear or something. It did start to fade a bit. It looked (and photographed) nicely, though.
The John Deere paint does seem to be something other than the Valspar posted earlier. I love the self leveling aspect. The one car I painted came out matte and I used Lacquer!!! Obviously I didn't know what I was doing.
Now to find out if it comes in other colors. I have a project car that could benefit from a matte finish.
I painted my truck satin black with some Sherwin Williams industrial enamel I had leftover from a job. I spent more on tape than I did anything else.
you can get a flattening agent for clear that does the same matte/flat finish that would hold up just like clear.

Valspar actually makes the John Deere stuff.
I was told it does not come in other colors. Don't know for sure though.

That's how lacquer is.
You have to rub it out, and buff it.
This is what we need

I want to paint my motorcycle like F1 driver Nico Rosbergs helmet.
I couldn't find the best picture, but he had his helmet painted what looked like gloss white with matte gray and matte yellow.

Yeah, but they just didn't tell me how much work it was rubbing it out and buffing it. I decided I liked the matte finish and got lots of good compliments. That was back in 1971 so I guess you could say I invented the matte finish on cars.
