Just a few minutes ago I found a really nice looking 626, a 2000, with V6 and automatic transmission (very low miles, for year) but am a bit worried and confused by the reputation Mazda automatic transmissions have. From what I have found online, the automatic transmission used with the 4 cylinder engine,is junk. What's the "deal" with the automatic transmission used with the V6? (According to Wiki, the 4 and the 6 use different automatic transmissions.)

It's the 4 cylinder ones that were junk. I worked at a Mazda dealer back in the early 2000s and we would do at least one 4 cyl auto trans a month, and that's in a small town.

The V6 transmission is decently reliable, it just has a TON of parasitic loss.

The Probe GT manual was a high 15 second car in the 1/4 mile. The Probe GT Automatic was a mid-17 second car.
