I am looking to 'squirt an M20 e30 and have both these options local to me for $300, both with harness. Not looking for anything too fancy, but would like sequential injection and spark control, and to swap out the AFM for MAF.

Thoughts on which would be better/easier to set up? Either of these worth $300 (MS1 seems rather old for $300).

What you have pictured are

1) ms2 on a v3 mainboard. If built by someone that knows what they are doing can be solid

2) microsquirt v3

both run ms2 code so the only difference is the packaging and posssible features. The ms2 can be modded to do more but the micro can do most things as is.

Microsquirt only does batch fire.  I don't know about the other.

I am pretty sure that neither one can do six injectors without modding or an external box.

The Microsquirt shown only has two injector drivers, for example.  The latest Microsquirt (may be called something else) has four drivers.

The easy button IMO is going to be an MS3X or a Pro box.  It's not so much a case of "you can't get there from here" as it is that if you are starting from nothing, you may as well go the easy route and trade some dollars for headaches.

That's if you really really want sequential.  I have a feeling that your engine and intake manifold were designed to work well with batch fire, so it isn't going to be super critical for you.

If you are dead set on using a MAF and not tuning speed-density, note that the MS2 based units can only use a voltage based MAF like a Ford unit, which are pretty sensitive to voltage drops and ground paths.  The GM style frequency based MAFs are much more user friendly, but you need something MS3 based (maybe Pro based?) to use one.

Personally I'd just go speed density.

Neither the Microsquirt V3 nor the MS2 can do 6 cylinder sequential injection, they only have 2 injector channels.  You can batch fire the injectors in two banks, with 3 on each driver.  Microsquirt only has up to 4 ignition channels, so no sequential that way. MS2 can be modded for up to 6 ignition channels.

Best option is to move to a MS3X or other ecu with more ignition and injector channels instead.

+1 for MS3X, I've been happy with mine in the AE92.

You could convert the MS2 to an MS3X with some add ons if you must have sequential injection, while the Microsquirt has no such upgrade path.

However, no factory M20 electronics were ever sequential. The Microsquirt is a more standardized product next to the MS2, which often has or needs custom mods. So the Microsquirt can have a shallower learning curve here.

I have done a ton of inline 6s on both the micro and ms2 and wouldn't recommend spending more on sequential unless you plan to tune the injection angled.

In reply to Paul_VR6 (Forum Supporter) :

I knew someone who was fond of turbocharging Eta engines and he never used anything more fancy than batch fire and a distributor.

This was before MS2 even existed so he was using what later came to be known as MS1.

300hp/300ft-lb seemed to be the happy place for an autocross car, and he could fit 275s under an E30.

Sequential is not needed.

I use to tell people that were bragging about there new fangled injected cars back in the 90s that the carburetor on my Z28 was sequential as it sequentially fed fuel and air to each cylinder.  The looks I got were priceless.

Ya ok I am a bit weird.

Thanks for the info! Learnin' things.

I think we'll nix sequential injection for now and work off the megasquirt.
