A 36-1 wheel provides a much more accurate signal for the ECU to use to calculate spark timing than a per cylinder signal.

EDIS is capable of resolving to 4us (5/32nd of a degree) for each cylinder ignition event.
The timing can be altered on-the fly with new SAW between each cylinder ignition event.
There is no points bounce, no signal jitter due to mechanical drive backlash (timing chain/dizzy drive gear/centrifugal advance).
Can it be improved upon?
Of course!
Go right ahead if your use case requires it, spend the time, effort, money.
