Are these cars any good? There is a very nice looking 190e 2.6 locally for $750. It apparently won't shift into fourth. Would that car be a terrible plan? Just over a 100k miles.

They're good. W201s were still of the era "Engineered Like No Other Car In The World."
The 2.6 engines are good, and if the slushbox goes totally haywire, you can throw a manual in it.
I bought my first Mercedes-Benz a year ago (an '88 W126 300SE), and love the feel of these old things. W201s were built like tanks; they're very tough.
