I'm in the process of upgrading my Miata with a 1.8 diff and noticed that the damper(?) is spinning freely. I've read that this is a common thing for the 1.8 diff and the easiest thing to do is cut it off. Is that ok to do?

Never played with it, honestly.

Mazda made that rearend for many years without a damper. It's an NVH thing since people didn't want their new Miata to drive like a twenty year old rear drive 626.

I always thought the old 626 looked kinda funky. Ok, off it comes.

Yup. Hack it off.

Interestingly, one was added to the ND diff shortly after production started.

Without it the diff probably makes a funny noise or something when you're going exactly 57.4 MPH in 4th gear on a cold day with no passenger, or something to that effect that people who buy new cars tend to complain about.
