Not that kind of fan, my daughter's 2001 Miata's fans won't turn on. We jumped them direct and they worked. Fuses are good. We unplugged the temperature sensor and the gauge went cold and the engine light came on so does that mean that it is ok? We have voltage to the relay and it tested good. We put 12v on one terminal and ground the other and it clicked. Then it had continuity on the other 2 terminals. We checked for continuity in the wires from the relay to the fans. The last place we have voltage is at the relay. What are we missing? Thanks
Plug a scanner into the car and check for pending codes and a plausible coolant reading. The gauge sender and the ECU temp sender are two electrically separate units that share a housing and a bad temp reading might do this.
Also check your coolant level.
In reply to Keith Tanner :
The coolant level is good, we checked that after it overheated idling in the bank drive through:( We will put a scanner on it. Thanks Keith
IIRC one should kick in when you put on the AC. No?
On my 2002 it seems like the left fan is triggered by the AC separately and both also kick on at I think 207f. I had an issue with neither of my fans coming on. I logged mine with forscan and everything was being commanded on the ECU end of things and the data I was getting from the sensor matched what the gauge was telling me. Relays turned out to be the problem with mine.
Yup, tap the relay, it might be a little sticky or have a slightly dodgy connection/wire that isn't passing enough current to pull it on.
Neither fan came on with the AC on. I'll scan it this afternoon. We took the relay out, it closed when we put 12v on the hot side and grounded the other. It was close to 0 ohms across the other terminals. Fun fact, the relays are under the fender. Glad you don't have to mess with them often. Thanks for the ideas guys
