There's a difference between "acceptable" and "normal". One's at the threshold of the spec, one's in the middle.

People always jump to the oil rings. How about we try valve stem seals first, and that’s only after getting a leakdown test.

Because excessive oil consumption is almost never valve seals.

Got it, but the PCV valve looked almost new.  Granted we have had the car for about a year.

I've had 3 miatas.  None burned any significant oil.

My beater 96 is in the same boat, but, like TheRielDeal, I only loose about a quart every 1000 miles and it smokes under decel, so I'm assuming valve seals.

Replacing the pcv took me from a quart every fill up to that number, so it's likely not to be a single, $1.79 bullet..

The original post said it burns a quart a week.  That is a bit meaningless.  Does your son drive it to school and home, putting a hundred miles a week on?  Does he drive to Nome Alaska once a week, putting five thousand miles on?

An engine burning oil at 200,000 miles generally means you either need to buy a case of oil, or pony up for a proper rebuild.

disagree to a point.  I had a car, not Miata, that smoked on deceleration.   New rings fixed it.

valve seals will show up after idle, at least it did on my Neon.    No smoke on deceleration.
