Because excessive oil consumption is almost never valve seals.

Got it, but the PCV valve looked almost new. Granted we have had the car for about a year.
My beater 96 is in the same boat, but, like TheRielDeal, I only loose about a quart every 1000 miles and it smokes under decel, so I'm assuming valve seals.
Replacing the pcv took me from a quart every fill up to that number, so it's likely not to be a single, $1.79 bullet..
The original post said it burns a quart a week. That is a bit meaningless. Does your son drive it to school and home, putting a hundred miles a week on? Does he drive to Nome Alaska once a week, putting five thousand miles on?
An engine burning oil at 200,000 miles generally means you either need to buy a case of oil, or pony up for a proper rebuild.
