Don't fuss about car setup your first time. It's a Miata, so it won't do anything weird. The limiting factor is going to be the loose nut behind the steering wheel.

For helmets, most events will let you use a Snell SA or M (motorcycle) rated helmet from the past 2-3 certification periods. The only real difference is that M helmets do not have flame retardant lining. You should easily be able to find a new M2005 for less than $100. Do not buy used.

Despite the "how much is your head worth" arguments, any Snell helmet meeting the same rating requirements will protect you the same in a crash. More money does not really buy more safety, it buys more features/comfort from things like lighter materials, fancy vents, and fitment padding.

I would get the car pre-teched at a local shop just so that you have less to worry about on the actual day of your event.

I am a NASA instuctor here in the west. As for the seat difference we allow a racing seat and a stock seat, BUT the instructor has final say as to whether or not they feel safe riding in the car. After all it is our well being we are risking. That being said I have not refused any students. Usually it is their driving that concerns me more, especially in the beginning groups ( 1&2). If I were getting into a group3 or four carI would be more concerned as the speeds are greater and the car will be more on edge. Also as for the roll bar it HAS to be a purpose built roll bar ( i.e. for use on a track) and we do use the broomstick test, ( broomstick on the top edge of the bar has to be above the helmet of the seated driver). It is for your safety.
