Well that sucks. I knew they were not making a profit out there. I hope the county or someone else step up and run the operations. They built out a very nice facility out there and it would be no good see it all ripped up.
It just goes to show how hard it is to really run a profitable race track. There is a very thin line of profitability in track operations. You are seeing that with a lot of the newer facilities built, COTA included.
You can understand, though.. Who wants to go all the way out to Utah?
I've wanted top drive there, but as an east coaster, if I were going that distance, I'd head north to Leguna Seca.. I would never make it there.
I think you need a large population density to make the numbers work, as so few people will actually show up to anything other then a NASCAR event, and Utah doesn't have that or the appeal.
And possibly good news: http://www.motorsport.com/automotive/news/don-t-throw-dirt-on-the-grave-of-miller-motorsports-park-quite-yet
It seems like the obvious answer would be for a manufacturer to use it as a test and development facility, as well as a venue for the public.
I think they spent something like $120 million building it. It's hard to believe it won't be sold to someone who will do a much better job of courting the professional race series and run it.
