For what it's worth, I've done my own comparison on the track. Cars: -1995 FMII Turbo Miata w/full SM suspension on 225 R comps.

-2007 Mini Cooper S w/factory sport suspension on 215 R comps.

The Miata is approx 200 Lbs lighter and puts down 40-50 more HP. The MINI has better steering feedback and is easier to drive at the limit. The torque steer that bugs you on the street is forgotten, mainly because you're never in 1st or 2nd gear.

Lap times - Miata wins by about 2 seconds a lap.

Conclusion - Both a lot of fun, but for different reasons. The Mini feels more grippy and stable, push it 'til it plows then back off a little. Easy to drive. The Miata is a little more adjustable, some push/some looseness depending on the corner. It's more challenging but ultimately more rewarding too. Just one man's opinion -YMMV

To not stray too far from the OP- I do like the profile. Pretty cool rememberance of some of the Mini variants.

I think I'll be the dissenting voice. I don't see what they gain by this layout.

Is it going to be substantially lighter? Short wheelbase? Or is it just a chopped MINI?

If they actually make it smaller/lighter, cool. If not, I'd rather maintain the functionality of the hatch. If I want a lighter 2-seater, I'll pull the back seats. Then I'll have even more usable space.
