as cool as mine?
As far as i know there's never been much of an 'aftermarket' in USA for the motor, but you will occasionally see some Starions and Conquests making big numbers. Very commonly you'll see them make perfectly normal kinds of awesome power (considering what a d50 weighs) of ~200whp and almost 300 lb ft on stockish turbo setups.
A good place to start would be some of the popular Starquest (Starion/Conquest) forums.
I frequent the StarQuestClub.com site. I'm sure there are some RAM 50 site out there that can point the way as well.
These guys sell a lot of Starquest parts:

Hmm, methinks a Starquest engine swap is in order...
Years ago when the late 70s Dodge Colts and Plymouth Arrows where competing in SCCA races there was good support. Direct Connection and later Mopar Performance carried parts, but that was long ago.
Small block Mopars and 904 trannys fit.

Problem is that our 89 is a carb engine. Also 4wd. There is an 87 in York, PA with a bad engine. Maybe a V8 swap?
Uh, use MegaSquirt and swap in a 4G64 (2.4L) with a 4G63 turbo top end.
I would put MegaSquirt on the stock 2.6L and get used to tuning with it while you work with your son on building up the suspension and a motor to swap in place.
That's because the passenger car versions had "Jet Valves" added to the heads that weakened the casting and caused them to crack.
The truck version shouldn't have this problem I think, but they still crack if abused severely.

BTW, the turbo versions used TBI, not Multipoint, makes for an easier solution to adapt to MegaSquirt. :)

MegaSquirts confuse me. DK what kind of fuel pump to use to feed the injectors. Not good at assembling electronic components. I am a bond trader damn it. I have enough trouble figuring out the markets.

The truck has 106,000 orignal miles and has a new cylinder head. The engine is quite nice.
