So I've come across a Galant localy. It's the same generation (6th) as the VR4 version, although this one certainly is not a VR4. I'm looking for a rallycross car, I want something that will handle the punishment but not be a total piece of E36 M3.
My questions are these:
Do the FWD versions have any potential at all or would I be wasting my time?
Stock engine work for now until I swap in a 4G63 and a turbo?
How do they handle?

It probably already HAS a 4G63 albiet in nonturbo form. Most of them did.

They're heavy, slow, handle like boats, and they're just....
Not that great.
Unless you can get it for like... $500.

It's sub $500, but so are a lot of cars I'm considering.
if you can pick up a VR4.. it was that drivetrain that the evo was based on...

...and it was also very rare in the US, and it's legendary among the JDM crowd, and so will likely be highly overpriced for its condition if you do find one.

Right, I know the base Galant isn't the ideal Galant, there was just one local and I was curious of it's potential, if any.
They imported 3,000 VR-4s in just two years. Good luck. You could always buy a bashed Eclipse, strip it and convert. Cool car, but good luck.

I've got a friend who is getting rid of a Galant VR4, it's not $500 but does come with a talon to get the 5-lug swap from and a few upgrades.

Let me reiterate, this thread is not about the VR4, mad_machine brought it up.
It's not about looking for one or searching for one. It is a matter of this: I found a base '92 Galant for under $500. What is its potential?
None? Ok, I'll see what else I come across.

Probably none under normal conditions. I could make sure that it NEVER gets traction, if you so desire. But it would be completely useless from a rallycross perspective.

Cool, I'm tossing the idea.
Thanks for the replies.
