Never owned a Diesel. And I’m in need of something cheap and efficient.
Any experience with these?

It’s mostly rust that Kills them. Both 1.9td and the first gen tdi are good engines.
For motor and trans make sure you have the chance to start it from cold. Glow plugs are not that hard to change but it’s kind of a tedious job.
if it’s an aaz (non tdi Canada model) check the crank pulley for trueness. They have a key way that likes to shear off and cause valve on piston action.
Either way ask when the timing belt was done last. Make sure there are not leaks at the injector pump, and that there is no air in the lines before they reach the pump.
All mk3 clusters reset the odometer to 0 after 299999 so watch out for low mile examples.

Thanks,
I cut my teeth on 1.6/1.9 idi vw engines... they are really simple little beats.
For what it’s worth I find the mk3 platform is a great driving car, if they hadn’t all rusted into oblivion up here in the rust belt I’d willingly daily one now.

I’ve seen a few in Massachusetts that aren’t rusted badly. Seems like a good way to fulfill my car-project need while being an efficient daily driver. Just hoping they can be dependable.
they like injector nozzles and reflashes. you'll want a vr6 clutch upgrade which will require a g60 flywheel to mount up. Shine rear sway bars are gold if you can find one in the secondary market. Rust or a timing belt breaking is the only thing that will kill one.
