So a friend of mind propositioned me with an old merc ML320 he wants to get rid of. 1999 to be exact. He wants a bottle of scotch for it, johnny walker black at a min.
here the bullet points he gave me
The Bad:
- 247,000 miles
- Slow leak in front left tire
- Rear hatch locking actuator does not work. The hatch can be manually locked with the lever inside, but the key fob does not automatically lock it. The unlock actuator does work, so it can be unlocked with the fob automatically
- Strange noise when accelerating in 1st gear
- Loose heat shielding makes a noise when idling and just after starting and stopping
- Very small oil leak, 1 drop every 2 days. Does not consume oil
- Stereo does not work, but is included
- Cruise control does not work.
- Body is not pretty, minor rust, dents, etc
- Brakes work very well, but pulse slightly
- Antilock and Stability control dash lights are on
- Parking brake return spring is broken
The Good:
- Clear Title
- Passes Inspection
- No Check Engine Light
- Starts perfectly, every time, even in negative temperatures.
- All electronics other than the stereo and cruise control work fine (including heated front power seats, power side mirrors, rear windshield wipers and washer, etc)
- Heats up quick, but never overheats
- AWD works flawlessly, it REALLY hauls in the snow
- Great turning radius, easy to parallel park
Is an old, high mileage , non w123 merc something i want to run away from ? (im guessing it is?)
how much is a bottle of scotch these days? that sounds like a whiskey and pack of cigarettes car to me. canadian club and pall malls to be exact.
You'll want that scotch back afterwards.

For a bottle of scotch. I would be all over it. worst case you could part it out and buy a case of scotch.

Does he plan to share the scotch with you?
Of course I would do the trade, as long as the friend wouldn't be mad to see it torn apart or resold on... drive it till it breaks something major and send it to the junkyard?
$30 for a car? (I just looked up JWB prices). take it.
Edit: Edmunds fair market value says it's only worth $485? dang.

I don't think there's any love lost on the car. he made the same trade to get the car. He's been using it as a beater during the winter and is getting a minivan from his parents and will use that instead.
In that case, it sounds like fair market value is exactly one bottle of scotch.
mount up go pros and jump it like an izusu rodeo. post on youtube and profit.

At least he doesn't want a good bottle of Scotch (Macallan 25 and you'd have to really give it some thought)!

I might even give him a bottle of plat label for that. I can get those for like 70 bucks lol.

In reply to mndsm:
I think as long as you don't go blue label you would be ok.
How much free time do you have?
Try offering a bottle of PBR.
Negotiating isn't over until he says no.
100$ or so for a running car sounds like a deal to me. I say go for it.
In reply to airwerks:
A bottle? I'd start at a tall boy and work my way up from there.
Wait, PBR comes in bottles?

I was thinking about this and.... at 247k, anything major that's going to fail will either have done it already, will do it about a week after you get it, or will never, ever fail. I'm willing to bet with this car it's the last option.
The wheels alone are worth more than the bottle f scotch. Having worked on them, the first gen MLs have the second lowest build quality of any Mercedes ever built after the SLK. I'm thinking budget LeMons more than DD.

Hell go to any relatives house who lost a loved one a few years back bet you find multiple bottle of free booze....
Tossed out at least 14 bottle of 20+ year old se7en and Canadian club over the summer cleaning out a friends house for his widow. plus crap load of half bottles.
There ain't nothing more expensive than a cheap Mercedes. If it runs moves and you swap a bottle of Scotch for it do yourself a favor: get rid of it FAST.
It's worth it just for the story alone.

Most cars you get for 100 dollars dont start and move under there own power. I see no cons to this deal, most of your cons listed are very minor issues. If you dont like it, get it fi the small cheap stuff, clean it up and flip it.
There isnt a single on in the DFW on craigslist for under 3500.
