I have been waiting patiently for my FRS to arrive. (BIG lie on the patient thing)

So I come home last night and the dealer has left a message: "There will be an FRS in on Monday from 10-12:00am in case you want to test drive. Only pre-orders will get the drive so that we can sign off on the test drive conditin on our orders.

I booked a meeting for 10-12:00 am on Monday.

Am I feeling legitimately "Sick" tomorrow?

How many people are they trying to allow test drive this car in 2 hours? Can you get more than 30 minutes with the car. I would take the last test drive appointment of the day. My guess is they will clearly run late.

so.. call out of work for an hour of standing talking to the dealer and 5 minutes in the car for a trip around the block? Pass

Just go, and ensure you take a drive by your Job. If your Boss is a car-guy, he'll appreciate your judgement. Maybe you can call him/her and ask him what he thinks..

Wait, so they can "sign off on the test drive condition"? What does that mean? Does that mean you get to spend the time you need with the car to decide if you really like it, or does it mean to sit you in the seat for 5 minutes so they can eliminate a back out clause? This sounds like it's much more for them than you, and I'd expect that you'll get an experience that is much more for the dealer than you. I'm not sure that's worth taking any risks missing work for. If you're going to buy it no matter what, don't bother, you're just wasting everyone's time. If you legitimately need a test drive to decide if you want to buy the car, don't bother because it sounds like you won't get any kind of real test drive in.

Thismight have been one of the better collective responses...

You guys are right, If I show up, they are probably going to ask me to sign off on the "pending test drive clause" on the contract.

I doubt very much that I will get more than a run around the block.

I am going to pass on this.

That said, I am expecting the Toyobaru to be much the same as when I test drove the Miata in 1990; ten seconds after getting in the car, I knew it was a winner. If not, I can walk next door to the Mazda dealer.

Well, I drive by the Scion dealers on the way to work anyways, so swung in to see if I culd catch a glimpse of the FRS at 8:30 am. The sales manager saw and recognized me and said that the car was ready to go if I wanted to go for a drive.

I did.

You pre-ordered a car you haven't even driven yet? Why?!

Good news is that the only bit I care about they got perfect: It has telepahic steering. It wants to zip around corners and you can feel the lack of weight.

The thing sounds real stooopid. Seriously. Find the guy who created the "Sound Creator" and make him stop.

I actually like the looks. Takes me back to the 240Z we had many years ago and a benchmark car in my development as a gearhead.

Comfortable enough. I can work with this cabin. Blind spots are new to me and will require some getting used to. Kept wanting to reach out and "fix" the door mirrors as they are somewhat wonky trapezoids.

Stops hard without the antilocks kicking in. Sales lady did not actually scream during the maneuver.

The FRS is NOT a rocketship. Actually feels kinda pokey.Drives more like a diesel when you get on it. If you need a shove in the back on the way to work, then buy the Mustang. I rented a Mustang a while back trying to talk myself into that car, but there was no joy to be had turning the steeing wheel, so I passed. That said, the car will keep up wit traffic and has plenty of power to merge or pass.

Now for the bad news, the head honcho from Scion was there and he says no car until the end of June or even early July. That did not make me happy since original Scion promo said last week of May or first week of June. Makes me wonder how many times they will let the date slip.

There has been no line up of people to pre-purchase this car. So far only two of us have put down deposits.

I have a VIN for my car, so I can get the insurance quote.
