2005 base model MPV. Decent headlights, really great cut-off, no issues. A couple of weeks ago, the LH low beam/DRL was gone. The next day when I was heading out to get a new bulb, it was working again. Weird, but OK.

Yesterday, same thing. The LH low beam/DRL was out for most of the day and evening, then rejoined the party later that night. Working this morning, too.

Apparently this light has a part-time gig out of town. Has this ever happened to anybody else? Who the heck ever heard of a partially failed filament?

Suggestions (besides buying a spare bulb now rather than later)?

check the ground and socket. seems like an intermittant connection problem to me.

Happens to me all the time. I work nights, so if the car is running, the lights are on for nearly an hour, call it two hours a day. Low beam filaments like to melt a little and sag, I can usually beat on the headlights to get the two ends of the filament to touch enough for a connection and get another day or two out of them before they go for good.

Toss a new bulb in, hit the connector with a little contact cleaner, all should be well.

I can't speak specifically to your problem, but my sister's 2010 Mazda CX-7 has headlight issues to say the least. I have replaced the headlights on that car maybe 3 times this year alone!! By the way it really sucks to replace the headlights on that particular car.
