My birthday is coming up so I'm diverting some funds to money pit. Cost being equal what would you rather do? This is for a Genesis Coupe 2.0

  1. Turbo Upgrade: The motor already has an upgraded intercooler and cooling with a tune and safely pushes out 220 at the wheel. If I upgrade the turbo I'll be able to run 280-290 safely.

  2. Wheel and Tires: Car is currently on stock 18 inch rims and decent summer tires with spacers. Thinking about getting some XXRs and some gripper tires. The wheel width will increase 1.5 inches in the front and 1 inch in the back. The XXRs are slightly lighter and I can get rid of those spacers. I'm thinking it'll be about 20lbs saving total of unsprung weight. The car is a weekend car, I'm gonna be doing some auto cross and maybe a track day or two.

The baby is coming in April so my "I want" fund has been and will be taking hits :(

Unless you're planning on getting serious about the AX, I'd say go for the snail.

If it's an R-spec, I'd go with the turbo upgrade as it sounds like it's primarily a street car. If it isn't an R-spec, I'd recommend an LSD and some more aggressive pads as the diff makes the car noticeably more playful.

If autocrossing with any seriousness, make sure you check what mods will bump you into another class.

If the wheels put you head to head with cars you can never hope to beat....maybe think of different mods to go fast.

Street car/daily? Turbo

Autocross or track day? Tires

The car was modded as a street car so all the obvious mods have been done. I'm slowly getting into performance driving with AutoX so not too serious about it yet.

Also keep in mind that I'm in Korea where the AutoX scene is very small so most likely get a few rounds in and start doing track days. But car will be more street than track for now and the foreseeable future.

More power helps you go faster.

Stickier tires will help you accelerate faster, stop shorter and corner better.

The power upgrade will last a lot longer than a set of tires though.

Improving all phases of driving for a short time or improving a single phase for longer... Tough choice.

Tires are a maintenance item. You have to buy them anyway, so I'd start there.

You'll need to log in to post.
