Does the 25 year import law apply to motorcycles? I'm having a hard time figuring this out with the usual google searches

Maybe search on the 2-stroke forums. There are a fair amount of niche gray market at best '90's bikes registered in the states; not sure of legality, but I remember california registrations being worth about a $2k premium.

Here's an example. Perhaps you could get in contact with these guys.

I'm fully aware of the grey market bikes, I'm just wondering what the "proper" legal way to import one is. As long as the VIN has the correct amount of digits, getting a title is simple. It's the smog side/getting pulled over that has me perplexed.

Anyone have more insight on this?

The US Customs website simply says 'vehicles' older than 25 years old can be imported, as does the NHTSA website, so the rules should also apply to motorcycles since they are legally a vehicle. https://help.cbp.gov/app/answers/detail/a_id/278/~/importing-classic-or-antique-vehicles-%2F-cars-for-personal-use

California apparently has some restrictions for motorcycles newer than 1978: https://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/reg_hdbk/ch12/ch12_15.htm

Yes, it does apply. I imported three motorcycles into the US under this exemption.

Keep In mind that I found it pretty hard to get "normal" insurance for them and ended up with classic insurance with all the fun that brings to the table.
