I do agree with microb's idea of take some American Iron in with you and then take something European out.
Sure, 1965 Mustang sounds cool for big cash outlay but I'll bet even a '89 Trans Am that can be bought relatively cheap here can be turned into big return there.

I'll 2nd and 3rd the 205 GTI (BTW. OP is wrong. They look awesome the best looking hot hatch of the 80's) Or the Volvo 480 turbo. One more Uber Uber rare, and MG Metro turbo. Tiny hot hatch, probably less than 100 left running though.

I dont know about availability or prices but here is my list -peugeot 206 gti -ford rwd escort or sierra -earlt golf mk2 4wd -rover metro with stock honda b16 engine -various 5speed turbo volvo 240 including gt -clean lada niva -mg tf (may not be that reliable) -renault avantime -renault sport spider Caterham and renault spider are probably out of your budget..

Awesome! Thank you for the input. I'm still researching each of these, but so far they seem a bit on the practical end of what I'm thinking though. I havent resolved whether it will be worth it to live directly downtown but likely really won't have much urban need for the car as the train system is quite sufficient, i at least intend to use it for my work commute. I'm thinking more 'get out and drive' in the summer car, maybe take a long road trip, not really sure but definitely leaning more toward fun to drive and unique/cool than practical. But i really do appreciate the input to help start the brainstorming, I'm really not too familiar with EDM's unique offerings.

itd have to be fairly big return to be worth the hassle for me honestly, i had thought of that but not sure how it would be any different (financially) than someone over there importing one, in which case besides my better ability to hunt and peck in finding one?

haha, well its a subjective opinion, but yes, there's a reason its on my original list. to some degree I appreciate that theres not much more uniquely EDM than a fun, quirky tiny little hatch, but its just not the kind of thing that floats my boat.

Yeah i have yet to figure out taxes but have looked up some prices and should be able to find something decent in this range. If i can find something that fits the bill perfectly i would be more willing to extend the budget - the big question in that regard is if it would be worthwhile to sell my truck to open up some cash, because i would need to start the ball rolling on that if so (that is actually the main cause of this thread). What alfa? I'm a fan, and would just expect it to not be reliable.

This is a good list, glad you mentioned peugeot 206 in addition to 205. Whats with the avantime?? It keeps coming up but what am i missing? It doesnt appear particularly pretty or fun (?)

One thing to keep in mind is that the Scandinavian countries tend to have pretty high import taxes or car import taxes, although Norway seems to be the lowest of the three by fair margin, so it might not affect used car prices that much.

Mk1/Mk2 Escorts are likely to be out of your budget unless you're looking for one of the cooking 1.1L models or similar.

You're likely to find the best supply of early-ish Evos and other JDM goodness in the UK. A friend of mine there occasionally buys Evos and the like for his cousins in Sweden and sends them over because they're just not that readily available in Sweden (and expensive if/when they are).

My suggestions for JDM goodness, all should be available in the UK (although you need to check how hard they are to import into Norway):

  • Evos as you already mentioned
  • Mitsubishi Legnum, aka the Evo for grownups. Proper stealth speed
  • Subaru Legacy GT-B, competition to the Legnum

I did like the two Alfa 156s I owned, personally if I were in the market I'd get the 2L, the V6 was a tad too nose heavy for me.

TVRs are again readily available in the UK, although I probably wouldn't want to drive one in a Norwegian winter. I'd also look at the other UK small manufacturers like GTM, Ginetta, Marcos etc.

I mean, what's not to like about a GTM Libra:

Other than the fact that you'll be in Norway for quite a while before you can bring it back (they're early to mid 2000s cars).

Re Skylines - they're not that common in the rest of Europe, but again you'll find a ready supply of R32s - R34s in the UK. They were actually officially sold there, but most of the ones you can find are imports. Not a bad thing either, they use a lot of salt in the UK so UKDM cars tend to suffer from rust more than later imports.

In talking with a friend that just moved there, taxes are really high there. He paid almost what he paid for the car in taxes. It was nothing fancy either. It was just a VW polo. So just be prepared for that.

Not to be debbie downer, just being realistic. Europe is not a cheap place to live.

VAT is generally a lot higher in Europe than sales tax (only equivalent-ish tax) in the US. 20% is more or less the floor on that.

an EV isnt actually out of the running either, but i wasnt going to complicate the discussion here. i actually work with lithium-ion and energy storage technologies and will be going there with specific focus on that

but yeah ive actually gone there many times before for work and everything is expensive, and taxes are high. was also wondering what taxes on old (high pollution) cars would be - so thanks very much, was needing to get started on that and that website seems like it has exactly what i was needing to start figuring it out.

were the high taxes he paid from the annual motor vehicle tax and road toll or for the actual sale? i cant seem to find much on that website on actual sales/VAT tax, or much less for how that works for private party sale
