I searched and didn't see this posted yet so here it is. I know a lot of people aren't crazy about Motor Trend but all things considered it's an interesting article. Oh.....and our little buddy the Miata did pretty well too.

Wow, Motor Trend just justified their continued existence with that single article.
Well done, guys. I really wanted to see the Boxster S video, though!

The latest issue of EVO also had the best driver's car - but they didn't restrict themselves to stuff already on the market. It's a top 100, with the top 10 determined by shootout. Caterham, Elan, Zonda, hot Renaults, Evo...and a 1.6 Miata.

I tend to agree with you on this. This article seems better written that what I remember of Motor Trend.

Good read, but the deck seemed a little stacked - not in anybody's favor necessarily. Did anybody really think the Jag saloon could compete with a Cayman and Miata as a 'driver's car?' Just some odd choices. I'm sure a lot of that came down to necessary reality. BMW couldn't get them an M3, for instance. Lotus didn't give them an Exige. That sort of thing.
Interesting, though, and Pobst certainly offered some welcome insight.
Motor Trend lost my respect when they stopped publishing the competitions for COTY and ICOY and merely announced the winners. Lame.
This article is pretty cool though.

I immediately thought of those two also and of course the Elise.

That's the kind of thing Car and Driver would have done back in their "golden era". Back when they used to make fun of MT for being so shallow. Nice article.
I found the Boxster S video at MT's website. Pobst really loved it.

From the article: "Pobst, a Dayton, Ohio native..." I don't think that's true. When I first met Randy in 1983, he was living in Melbourne Beach, FL, and I had the impression that he had grown up there. I know he lived here in Melbourne until the mid-90's.
Randy appears in a MacNeil ad in the latest Car and Driver. I showed that to my wife and asked her if she recognized him. "Oh, yeah, that's your friend, right?" At least I can say that I was beaten by him at my first autocross!
I can't ever remember beating Randy, except maybe once when he showed up at a local event driving a rented Cutlass. And even then it was close.
I wish there was an option to view the whole article on one page. I hate this click next x 14 crap. It's almost as bad as video news stories or gallery views.
