(Solved)I am trying to determine if a T5 transmission from a GT will fit in my 2000 3.8L. I can't even confirm my car has the T5, the last one I can confirm is '99. Most people on Craigslist selling mustang transmissions seem to assume that the T5 was only in Fox bodies when I ask the year. I have been sick so please excuse me if this is a simple question.

Those 3.8s have been around for a loooong time. T5 should fit up to it with the correct bell housing. I'm not an expert on the different versions of the T5, so I'll leave that to someone else.

What year GT? It's my understanding the fox body 5.0L ones will fit. The 4.6 GTs use a T45 which doesn't.

I originally thought the 4.8L post '99 T5's would fit, I have the 3.8 bell housing, my transmission might be going and since I have to change the oil pan gasket, it sounds like a good time to change it. I read the Fox body 5.0 T5 had a longer input shaft. There is also a spline difference sometimes. Unless I find something really cheep I am probably better off getting one from a junkyard.

The 3.8 has the same bolt pattern but the input shaft length is different and it uses a different flywheel than the 5.0 so the starter wont engage.....or something like that

Depending on what year car the V8 transmission came from makes a difference too. The 94-95 SN95 cars have longer transmissions than the earlier foxes.

From a brief Internet snoop, the T-5 was used through the SN95 3.8's run. Donors would be either another 3.8 or the SN95 5.0's. Note that a 3.8 from 2000 on up has a speedo reluctor and not a mechanical gear drive for the speedo.

Unless you blow'd up your existing T-5 really badly, I think rebuilding your existing trans might be the smart way out, although a donor and possible parts swapping might be cheaper. What problem are you trying to solve?

I finally found the information I needed. I need a T5 from a 99 to 04 mustang. Anything else will need to be moded. My present transmission randomly grinds in any gear, can be hard to shift into 2nd and 4th and has always been slow to shift. It has always been impossible to power shift. I assume it was abused some time in the past. This is my daily driver and despite being unemployed I still need it running condition most of the time. The oil pan gasket should only take me a few days and I will already have the transmission off so I will see if I can swap it out at the same time. I guess my options are limited as there is nothing on Craigs list. I found one on Amazon for $550 so a local one shouldn't be too bad.

That sounds like it could be a stretched clutch cable.

You describe a bad clutch hydraulic system/cable, not a bad trans, though driving it like that for long will result in a bad trans.

Why didn't I think of that? I did notice the transmission has been shifting a lot better in this cold weather. I was thinking with doing away with the troublesome quadrant and putting a clutch cable adjuster in. Thanks for the help.
