Expectations: hillbilly Fun.

Reality: upscale fun, I was the only redneck in a cut off.

Im not a nascar fan. But I really enjoyed my experience today. We sprung for the Club One experience Gold package. The in laws got the platinum package. They both included all you can eat food and beverage service (very good!), AC box seats, access to a private CLEAN bathroom, and bar. And some swag. The atmosphere was pleasant and nothing like a DMV or Airport.

There was a rooftop look out which also allowed you to get a feel for what seeing and hearing the cars in person. You also get to bid on a silent auction for charity full of nascar collectibles and signed merch. I was outbid. On everything.

there's also nearby, reserved parking that allows quick ingress/egress from the event  parking was, as expected, madness. This comes as part of all the packages.

the Food: first round was salad bar, hot dogs and chips and sweets. Second round was slow cooked turkey and pork BBQ carving table and dirty rice and okra. Third round was an open nacho bar.

the platinum pack got you all of Gold+ all you can drink alcohol (cocktails, beer, wine, etc). the platinum pack also got you some warm baked cookies at the end. The gold pack wasn't supposed to get the nachos, but we got nachos anyway....

Fun; we got pit passes. it was poorly orchestrated. As soon as our transportation took us into the pits, security began blockading everyone out of the pits. Shortly after that There was a concert. It was Flo Rida. it was alright, and imma Flo Rida fan. I can now say I have been hosed down with Champagne by Flo Rida.

Theres also a few driver meet and greets. They interview the drivers using pathetic microphones. And then the drivers don't hang out much. I get it, they are busy. We met Corey Lajoie and Cole Custer.

Overall: I would do it again. The poor souls in the sweltering mug and heat were miserable. Upon leaving the event, many appeared to be survivors of some sort of apocalyptic event. Lesson learned; it pays to pony up.

I was going to give you bonus points because this picture makes it look like you were rocking a mullet.

Not the first person to notice! Alas, I don't have a mullet. I have tried and the misses gives me stink eye everytime.

I thought this was going to be about driving up SR-400 at rush hour. It feels a lot like a speedway when it doesn't feel like a parking lot.

I totally thought you had a mullet too, I was going to joke that you fit right in.

Glad you enjoyed the experience.  I'm sure it was vastly different than it was for the folks who bought the cheap seats.  Speaking of, were the grandstands crowded?  I was out of town so I didn't see any of it.  Attendance at races has been fairly sparse for quite some time now.  I have seen very little NASCAR this year.  I've seen bits and pieces of all 3 "major" series and in the truck races it looks like someone forgot to open the grandstands...

The stands were not very full. The folks there were of the grassroots type. Hardcore. Dedicated despite weather.

I'm glad you enjoyed your experience at AMS. I hope you stayed cool there. Man, it was hot on the other side of the city at Road Atlanta on Friday.

My brother and I did much the same, buying "skybox" tickets to the SCCA Runoffs at Laguna Seca. It was frustratingly epic to see how the other half lives - on par with the time I rode in a Learjet 300 miles, we landed, and taxied right up to the hanger where I had work to do, then back home by lunch. Amazing.

Summed up: be careful about doing something like this because once you do, you're tainted, knowing what you're missing the next time you go, sitting in the peasant seats :)

It's neat that as a non-Nascar fan you were still able to enjoy the race and environment.

From my perspective, 50% of the fun of the races is the epic tailgating before and after the event.

Next weekend my family (wife, 8 and 13 year olds) and a couple of friends will head to New Hampshire for the races.

We will be up there 4 days, and both Saturday and Sunday I have a reserved tailgating spot without close proximity to the main entrance.

We eat all we can stand, drink enough to both stay hydrated and libated (is that a word), play games and listen to loud music.

Tonight my 13 year old, who is in her "everything sucks" phase, turned to me and said "Dad, I'm really looking forward to our trip to the races this weekend!".  The fun our kids have throughout the whole weekend is well worth the effort and expense.

Better get your tickets for next year's AMS race soon!
