Actually, not mine, yet. But just found an ad on CL for an '87 Comanche that the owner says died on him suddenly about 6-8 months ago. The coil was replaced and that didn't do it any good. What's a likely cause of failure for a 4 liter/6 cylinder Comanche?

If you're looking for a silver bullet, fire a crank position sensor at it. If you'd rather not enrich Autozone by using the scatter gun approach to diagnosis, do some basic tests and get back to me.

I'm not exactly trying to "scatter gun" this problem so much as get an idea as to what might be wrong and/or what I'm looking at for a price to get it fixed. I guess I should just walk away from something I can't troubleshoot on my own, but the possibility of picking up a 4X4, and a rare one at that had me thinking I'd get a bit of help from someone who's had experience with Comanches and Cherokees.

Crank sensor is a good bet. Common failure on those.

I'll second crank sensor. The one in mine died. Because the EFI is sequential, the crank sensor kills the fuel and the spark.

The proprietary Renault EFI system that nothing but a Renault reader will scan makes diagnosis oh-so fun.

Sometimes the sensor will be on it's way out, unplugging it and plugging it back in may get you a couple start cycles to get it home.
