Project for me is an overstatement. I'm not one to rebuild my own engines, but I may be the one to pull it, so to speak. Nonetheless, I've been making some strides in mechanical and bodywork over the last year, and I'm ready to tackle something new. My VW lease ends in 60 some odd days, so the time is coming.

At first I wanted a 944 again. I don't need two sportscars, and as crazy as it may sound, I'd prefer the MGB GT to a 944 na anyways. I also really don't want to learn to work on a 944, I think I would get frustrated over the cost of things. I have the W123 Benz as a utility car that is vintage/classic and cool. What I really could use is a truck to haul stuff. I was starting to look for a Chevy/GMC step side from the 80's, with a v-8 and 4WD, because they rock.

Then I ran into a local Jeep J 10 for sale, full time quadra-trac drive, v8, not a step side but it does have those subtle J 10 wheel "flares". Its a 77 in running condition for $1200. It has a wooden bed that needs to be redone, which could be a lot of fun and opens up a lot of possibilities for wood type and stain color, and it needs bodywork and upholstery. Basically, it needs serious cosmetic attention and likely some real mechanical attention, too. Suspension, brakes, the drivetrain, etc.

I looked up parts and they are cheap! Including things like master cylinders ($50) and body panels! Anyway, thoughts on the J 10? I think they are bad ass. Anyone have any experience with one?

I really haven't got anything to add apart from the J10 looking like a cool truck.

wait, youre not sure weather or not to pull the trigger on a low buck J10? is this a trick? wait, is this paul, did he put you up to this?

Really, thats a no brainer. Some of my earliest memories are of me sliding around the bench in a wagoneer and a J10 from the late 70s. Id punch a nun to get my hands on one of those trucks for that price...twice in the face if it ran/shifted well.

Quadra-trac is not the best option.

+1 Not as horrible as the reputation suggests but I'd prefer the normal transfer case myself. If it already has a wood bed watch out for rust. FSJs are known rot boxes-the bed may have fallen off.

Great info here on the IFSJA forums. I highly advise doing some research on the boards before buying.

I miss my 85 J-10!
