A friend of my daughter has a refundable deposit on a 2010 Boxster manual. She grew up driving a stick so no issues with that.
What potential trouble areas should she look for? It is a California car.

2010 shouldn't have any real mechanical trouble areas (no IMS bearing for one). I'm not really familiar with 987 boxsters specifically but I'd assume the top mechanism would be worth taking a look at like the older cars. I think that's really about it assuming there's no obvious signs of abuse or neglect anywhere.
Ditto that, mostly look for documentation and other evidence that the car has been well maintained. As for issues, look for evidence of leaks (musty smelling carpet, etc). There are expensive electronic modules under the seats that can be ruined by water damage.
