driving HW I get 35mpg in my 91 with 175k... PS, A/C, slushbox trans (which is what eats most of the MPG i'd guess)... put the hatch down and it's pretty good... but IMHO no where near as roomy or good driving as the neon (granted mine was an ACR)

There are many companies that make cheap swap kits to put a VW diesel into a suzuki samurai.

Are there any other cars that have cheap swap kits for the VW diesels?

Like a diesel geo metro?

Hm, since a Samurai and a Metro use essentially the same engine...

Whats wrong with the cars that come with VW diesels? (other than maybe costing a lot depending on where you live). The engine is the expensive part, the cars are cheap.

mid 90's 2 door Cavalier.. not a hatch ( the rear seats fold down) but the pushrod 2.2 is dead reliable and if you get one with a 5 speed and do a few simple aero things (block off grille, remove passenger side mirror) and replace the intake baffle in the fender with a chunk of hose going to a duct that is zip tied to the front spoiler, you will have a 40mpg car that is reasonably peppy and doesn't feel like it's going to fall apart about 60mph. also, they are fairly roomy for a car that size- i'm 5'11" 240, and i don't feel cramped in one.

your $1500 budget buys you a $500 car and leaves some budget room for a new trans when it blows, a head gasket when it lets go, and a fuel pump when it leaves you on the side of the road..

There is no such thing as a repeatable, cheap vw diesel swap. The engines are expensive for what they are.

Ive been trying to find a way to do a tdi swap for years but i have a hard time working myself up to spending ~2k for the motor i want when i have done SOOOOOOOO MUCH MORE with 2k in the past than just buy a stock 100hp motor.

I thought people practically gave away the 1.6. Although slow, supposedly it sips

Um. Okay I'll bite. Any idea how much one would cost to import legally? If it's less than $2000 I will do it. It's too bad they are right hand drive.

I'm guessing it'll be at least $2000+ just to get it here, plus the purchase price, plus replacing EVERY and rubber line in that thing now that it's sat for that long.

I think I'd rather have a 1.6L VW diesel powered geo metro. Would be so lolz with some aeromods.

I dont see a metro being THAT much lighter than an original early 80s vw.. not enough to justify the swap....

I can't fit in a cabriolet which is supposedly MKi through and through. My shins hit the wheel.

i picked up a 97 5spd tercel coupe with 400k km on it, for $700, the car is in practically showroom condition, and i'm getting 48mpg hwy and 40ish mixed city with serious flogging. and it's got plenty of balls IMHO...

and it looks pretty sharp!

Explain? No, none of them get the same mileage as a Tercel, but they're also light years faster, which is useful to someone like me who has a couple left lane onramps on his daily commute that often reaches 80mph. I gotta be able to do that in a matter of seconds, not minutes.

We did.

Tercel EZ. Heaven help you if you think it's going to be confidence-instilling at highway speeds, though. Believe it also only came with a 4spd. The only Tercel/Paseo worth looking at for your criteria would be 92-ish on up. And those don't really have a big enough mpg advantage to bother in this crowd, in my opinion.

(That said, i want a Paseo.)

Am I missing some weird canadian unit conversion?

Everyone is getting mid 30s combined it looks like. Good mileage, but no way is it 48 hwy, 40 city

The family 1.8L Prism gets 34 mpg. How could a Tercel get less?

Less power means it has to work harder? I doubt it would get LESS, but not really much an improvement. I bet the Prism does better at highway speeds 70mph and above than the Tercel as well.

This is a good thing from an efficiency standpoint. Then again, the Tercel doesn't have that much less power, and it weighs <2100lbs, so I doubt its working much harder at non-highway speeds.

Apples to Apples:

Fuel Economy.gov Tercel: 28/35, 31 combined Prism: 25/32, 28 combined

Fuelly: Prism - approx 31 Tercel - approx 35
