Oil consumption though a guide etc should also add the complaint of having to add oil but that was not mentioned in the original post. The problem of oil lowering fuel octane and causing fouling misfires typically comes with a quart or better between changes.
The cold start misfire makes me think of head gasket failure.
When I suspect a problem like that this is what I do- Remove all spark plugs and pressure test the cooling system overnight. If the head gasket is leaking you'll see a pool of coolant in the offending cylinder the next morning.
In reply to Cone_Junky:
Wouldn't that problem be present when doing a compression test? Oh wait, need to perform a leakdown test for that one. I'll discuss it with him (tech) and see what he thinks.
Hotline wants us to get to operating temperature and pull plugs to recheck for oil saturation in cylinder #4. I'll let you know what we find.
I'd stick a swab or similar down there and get a sample of the wetness. If it's oil or coolant, behead the beast. If it's fuel, look elsewhere.
About cold misfires: due to RVP (Reid Vapor Pressurization) issues typically misfires are ignored for the first (IIRC) 180 seconds of a start cycle.
Well, after heating it up we found a scratch or crack on the top of that piston. Going to pull the head to inspect further as to what exactly it is. Can't tell much from the little remote camera we stuck down there. I'll let you know as we find out. Pix to follow I'm sure.
