In 40 years of pulling boats up ramps, I've never needed 4WD. I can't recall ever spinning the tires on a ramp for that fact. I'd buy the older Burb before I bought a newer one. The only thing I don't like about the 88 you posted is the Turbo 400 trans. That means no overdrive.

So I just talked to the guy. He is a car guy, does paint and body on hot rods and muscle cars. Truck was bought to tow car bodies and stuff a couple years back as a cheaper option to a dually. It has done well in that regard but he decided to downsize to a single cab 7.3L ford since he never has passengers.

One flaky buyer wants to look at it tomorrow. If he doesn't buy I'll drive up Saturday to take a look.

In reply to ultraclyde: The NEED for 4wd is over rated.

Back when I was towing my ice racer with my 4wd KJ, after the races I towed off the lake and when I got on the pavement I reached down to take it out of 4wd. Guess what. It had been in 2d all the time.

What about full sized vans? Or a crew can pickup with a cap?

Crew crab trucks carry a price premium over suvs around here, although I am open to them. Vans that can reliably tow over 8k lbs arent real common, plus I just prefer trucks and suvs.

You don't need 4x4 on a boat ramp until you do. I've been around boats my whole life and dad (boat addict, never has less than 3) has had both 4x2 and 4x4 and we've got over 65 years of boating experience combined. I've spent more times bouncing on the bumper of that 4x2 and tons of other guys trucks more times than I'd like to admit. It's usually during busy times when many people pull their boat out and the ramp gets wet. We have been using a 2000 expedition 4x4 5.4 for probably 10 years and it's got 300k with the only major repair a trans rebuild at 120k shortly after we bought it. I feel you on the not as neat thing but if you tow very far that but that suburban is going to suck gas down without offering much in return in the power department. If it was cheaper it wouldn't be bad, they are heavy enough and if you put in an lsd if it doesn't have the gov bomb g80 it's probably okay but at that price point I'd want it to be a 4x4

With a lot of weight on the hitch, it removes weight from the front wheels. Add a grade, and the front wheels are barely making contact with the ground. (Im exaggerating a bit) I can't see 4WD being all that much help in most situations. The only time I have seen someone need it is if they back up too far and drop off the end of the ramp into the prop-wash hole.

Both of those probably have some room in their prices

E350's should easily tow 9k.

Well, the Burb sold so it's back to being on the lookout.
