1957 Lawn Boy Loafer - $250
I really want to go look at it, but I have to keep reminding myself: You don't have any money, you don't have any space, you don't have time, you have school...
I really want to go look at it.
Dangerous... in a good way!

Now picture it with a mower deck underneath, while riding along a steep side slope.
I see fail all over the concept of that thing having a cutting deck

I would have thought going over backwards would be the least of your worries. I was wrong.
Standing and walking behind the mower looks like it would be a more comfortable option after about 5 minutes.

we owned one of these when i was a kid, like the brown/gold one in the first pictures in the thread.
my dad had bought it with both the snowplow and the mower. the plow didn't work, so that was gone pretty early, and he hated using the mower with the tractor because who wants two noisy engines running while mowing the lawn. (on ours i believe the front wheels of the tractor came off and were replaced by the mower, unlike the green tractor in the later pictures.)
he traded the mower in on a different model (a Jari Chief sickle bar mower), but kept the tractor, for fun. and it was definitely fun -- it wheelied easily, and turned on a dime. great memories. (and it was very comfortable to sit on, as i recall.)

btw, there's a youtube video of a Loafer in action here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQnB7Dr1rRI

We had one of those when I was a kid as well. It was dangerous in its own right...that sickle bar would cut through anything. I accidentally chopped down a couple small trees with it. The old Jari factory is a couple blocks down the street from my house; today it's a Somali mall.
I think I would rather have a gocart
I was just about to post "Wait! I just saw one of those posted somewhere on the internet!" Then I realized this thread was from Oct. and this where I saw it.

In reply to stuart in mn:
for our purposes, cutting down small trees was exactly the point. we owned some land in the country that only needed mowing a couple of times a year. taking down year-old growth gave a huge feeling of empowement. :-)
